“Carrots and Sticks” or “Intrinsic Motivation” David McLean speaks at HRPA 2010 Conference

John Savio and Reko Rivera of Florida pay homage to the iPhone with their working “guyphone” Halloween costumes.  Completely ‘teched’ out with 42-inch flat screen TVs, powered by portable battery packs, Savio and Rivera spent over 90 hours crafting their costumes.

Upon viewing the video, a number of reactions swept through me:
the geek in me said, “WOW – that’s cool!”
the athlete in me said, “that’s gotta be heavy !”
the Mom in me said, “I hope they’re careful when dancing!”

But something else struck me – Savio and Rivera are an example of what can happen when people are fully-engaged.  From their initial inspiration, they put their skills, talents and energy to work in order to execute their idea flawlessly.  In an interview with a Florida newspaper, Rivera expressed:  ”We do what makes us happy…and this makes us happy.”

Fully-Engaged Indeed!
